ABSTRACT

As a teacher in the 21st century, it is vital that teachers can use their skills in information and communication technologies (ICT) to support their teaching and that they are able to design opportunities for learners to develop their own ICT skills. This chapter provides an overview of ICT, describing how one can best select from the wealth of software available to make sure one is genuinely designing opportunities for learners to develop their skills rather than just filling time working at a computer. It discusses how teachers can use calculators to support children’s learning, drawing on the research around the use of calculators in primary schools. The chapter argues that teachers in primary schools and early years’ settings should have calculators available all the time for the children they teach, whatever their age.
