ABSTRACT

This chapter helps practising teachers to consider their subject knowledge in three ways. First, practising teachers will reflect on their previous experiences of learning mathematics and think about their current levels of confidence in teaching mathematics. It is important to explore this area in an initial audit as confidence is a key facet of good subject knowledge. The second part of the audit explores practising teachers personal beliefs about what makes up effective mathematics teaching. Finally, practising teachers will audit their current understandings of mathematics in the areas of: problem solving using mathematics, number: counting; place value; fractions, decimals and percentages and number: knowing and using number facts. Visit the companion website containing the questionnaire and highlight the statements that most closely mirror students current beliefs using the highlighter tool.
