ABSTRACT

Considering both visual observation and forensic photography together, it can be said that they provide a useful combination for initial analysis and recording of failures. Patents are a rich and fertile source of information when undertaking a failure investigation. Rapid advances in digital imaging technologies have greatly improved many aspects of forensic photography. Considering both visual observation and forensic photography together, it can be said that they provide a useful combination for initial analysis and recording of failures. In summation, initial evidence at the scene of failure must be evaluated by careful visual observation, based on a common-sense approach, along with a refusal to jump to conclusions. Despite built-in safety factors, in-depth warning labels and user instructions, structural and equipment failure arising from service conditions is commonplace. Acute observation will allow more than just scrutiny of the artefact/s under examination; it may also provide an insight into the situation that led to failure in the first instance.
