ABSTRACT
This chapter is devoted to reviewing the assorted subcultural theories. Beginning with a review of the classic subcultural works of the 1950s and 1960s, the chapter provides extensive discussion of the subculture of violence and southern subculture of violence theses. The “Code of the Street” and, more recent, “Code of the Suburbs” perspectives are reviewed. Empirical tests of these theories are also reviewed.
