ABSTRACT

The neuroscience research confirmed the impressions we had that much of what we had previously assumed about leadership development needed to be significantly revised, at least if we wanted development to have an impact. Competencies provide the tool that allows a practitioner to translate strategy into the knowledge, skills and abilities required to achieve the strategy. Competencies are expressed in terms of behaviors and help people get away from thinking of leadership as a personality driven phenomenon or solely an innate capability. Research on innovation has shown that new ideas seldom come out of nowhere as a single flash of insight. Most innovations come from the discovery of unique connections among existing ideas that are forged to create new insights. An Impact Map helps clearly identify the business imperative and then aligns the intervention to enable the employees to achieve that outcome.
