ABSTRACT

Emerging technologies – big data, wearable medical technology devices, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) – are already affecting population health today, and the future development and amalgamation of these technologies will give rise to novel technological platforms, enabling personalized, predictive, and preventative health care analytics. The services offered will fundamentally affect how people consume health care, increasing patient empowerment and challenging the role of traditional health care providers. The platforms are likely to be developed and operated by large technology companies, new entrants to the health care market, the services they provide disrupting the organization, funding, and delivery of health care. As a result, the role of publicly funded health care in the Nordics today will need to transform to meet future expectations, and politicians will need to address the risks of increased inequality in health care caused by these changes. This chapter looks at the prerequisites for creating a predictive, personalized, and preventative health care platform, how publicly financed health care would be affected, and the broader implications to society.
