ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an analysis of the inter-Tajik negotiation process, scrutinizing the various roles played by multiple mediators in the process. The chapter first covers the period from the launch of the negotiations in April 1994 to December 1995, and then moves on to the period from January 1996 to the completion of the negotiations in June 1997. In addition to presenting initial observations on patterns of third-party involvement, the chapter also suggests possible research questions and propositions to be addressed in the rest of the book, with regard to the issues of cooperation, coordination, and complementarity and interconnectedness in multiparty mediation.
