ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter provides a brief introduction to the problem of wide-area monitoring. Features relevant for wide-area oscillation monitoring are reviewed, and key technological advances are discussed in terms of how they can be used to monitor power system status. The discussion focuses on the impacts, applications, and implications of these technologies. The role and integration of prognostic algorithms required to forecast system health are also discussed. State-of-the art concepts and applications of wide-area monitoring systems are also reviewed.
