ABSTRACT

In this chapter, focus is placed on development of the clinician as both a person and a professional. The use of reflexive practice is presented as a primary framework for enhancing self-awareness. This framework includes reflection-on-action, reflection-in-action, and reflection-on-self. Additionally, the personal motivations and expectations that bring an individual to trauma work are explored, and the common fears and self-doubt that often accompany the process of professional growth are discussed. A case example is presented to illustrate the concepts, and the chapter concludes with a keyword assessment, list of experiential activities, and supervisory discussion topics.
