ABSTRACT

Energy plays a significant role in global and national security: among all sectors of critical infrastructure, energy is perhaps the most prominent, as it sustains most of the other critical infrastructure sectors and their physical, cyber, and supply-chain aspects.

This chapter uses multidisciplinary tools to highlight the significance of energy security from an emergency and survival perspective. Moreover, this chapter defines the Energy Mix concept, and explains its role within a national energy strategy, from a homeland defense, geopolitical, and economic perspective. The “Pyramid of Energy Security” is an original concept that reflects the different aspects of energy security, i.e., sustainability, independence, efficiency, affordability, and accessibility.

This introductory chapter explains the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy, as well as the six (6) key classifications of energy types, i.e., (1) Electric, (2) Gravitational, (3) Kinetic, (4) Magnetic, (5) Radiant, and (6) Thermal Energy.

Finally, the stages of risk management and risk mitigation techniques and processes are introduced from an energy security perspective.
