ABSTRACT

This chapter is about Jahangir and his historical background: his birth; his tutors; his contact with Meherunnisa (later bestowed with the title Nur Mahal/Nur Jahan) and her influence; his drinking habits; his friendship and association with Mohammad Sharif; his fear of Abu’l Fazl; and the punishment meted out to his eldest son, Khusrau – all of which are gleaned from the memoirs of the emperor himself, the Jahangirnama, accomplished with the help of Mohammad Hadi’s accounts up until Jahangir’s death, as well as the Iqbalnama-i Jahangiri, Maasir-i Jahangiri and other contemporary works, including Jesuit accounts and travelogues.
