ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the effectivity of knowledge management as a managerial strategy in organizational context. The chapter begins with a historical overview of knowledge and the way it has been managed since time immemorial to achieve social functioning. In doing so, the chapter lays the groundwork behind the emergence of knowledge management as a formal strategy to boost organizational performance. Subsequently, it provides multiple definitions of knowledge management as furthered by different scholars. After providing a detailed description as to what processes and strategies knowledge management adheres, the chapter highlights how knowledge management as a formal strategy has evolved over the years. The evolution of knowledge management has been quite in tune to technological development. The chapter ends with a hope; the hope emerging from the connected spirit of contemporary digital technology and the innovative dimensions it has to offer in the domain of knowledge management. The inclusive potential of contemporary digital technologies facilitates effective collaboration between diverse agents, thereby giving renewed possibilities to the practice of knowledge exchange. It is only in the presence of such an empowering digital infrastructure that knowledge management as a strategy can cultivate its effectivity in boosting knowledge capability of organizations. The resultant impetus significantly highlights how knowledge management as a strategy is not only effective in organizational context but has redeeming possibilities to offer in the context of ushering in holistic social development.
