ABSTRACT

This chapter is constructed around two dreams involving Dan’s old friend, Betrice, who is dying. First, Dan dreams the contents of a phone call the day before it occurs. The next day her caregiver calls saying Bette is in a hospice. Unbeknownst to all, at that moment Bette is in the final hours of her life.

Dreaming of a future event appears to be evidence that Dan experiences multiple times in his unconscious. In one of these temporal dimensions time seems to run backwards. In that dimension the future is the cause of his present experience, and he remember the future rather than the past.

Dan has a second dream five days later. Bette, having died, is preparing to depart. She wants to take Dan with her. Dan agrees, and she spends days preparing him for the trip. At the last minute, Bette disappears in an orgasmic shudder. Dan is left behind wondering what happened.

These two dreams seem like gifts from Bette. Perhaps, missing one last contact in physical reality, Bette joins Dan in his dreams to reveal the symmetrical nature of time in the unconscious.
