ABSTRACT

Dan gave Frank a copy of his chapter, “I woke up dead.” Frank said he’d read it and email his response prior to their next session. Frank wanted to record his reactions before discussion colored his views. This gave Dan the idea of designing the book in three layers: Frank’s novel, interpreting the novel through the lens of psychoanalysis and quantum physics, and their collaboration.

Frank provided three reactions based on three readings of the chapter. Frank reacted negatively to how he was depicted. He was shocked that Dan had a troubled past. They’d reversed positions. Usually the analyst is barely visible. But now, Dan was in clear view and Frank slipped into the shadows.

At their next session they discussed Frank’s reactions. Dan offered to make revisions to his chapter which Frank rejected. Frank simply wanted his views recorded. Dan gave Frank “Conversations with Schrödinger’s Cat” and “Local time,” and they repeated the review process. Frank reacted enthusiastically. He discussed quantum theories of consciousness, quantum eraser experiments and Alice in wonderland. Frank referred to a paper by Johnjoe McFadden describing the mind as a field of electromagnetic radiation. Frank, his wife and close friend heartily endorsed The Project.
