ABSTRACT
This chapter is an overview of the history of abortion, legal and illegal, in England. It includes discussion of abortifacients, abortion law, deaths related to backstreet abortions and the campaign for legal abortion. It also includes some discussion of Lord David Steel’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bill and the creation of the 1967 Abortion Act. Finally, it discusses cross-party politics and the allegiances of different political parties.
