ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book. It does so not by summarising the contents herein, but rather by bringing forward the different conversations brought forth in the book. We also suggest a number of aggregated insights as to what is important when aspiring to and working with innovation.

First, we use the metaphor of a kernel to understand the key aspects of a vital innovation approach. Second, we argue for a systems approach that takes into consideration what exists beyond organisational boundaries; in particular, an enhanced capacity to view opportunities and create workable actions on those. Third, we use an integrative approach to take the kernel and systems view into account and propose seven characteristics that point towards a holistic approach. Reflecting on the contents of the book, we use the notion of lifeworld to remind us of the unruly aspect of innovation: the quality that cannot be so easily pinned down and what in effect makes innovation just that – innovation.
