ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the readers to the concept of ergonomics with examples from real-life scenarios. How to amplify human capabilities and increase human productivity while at the same time facilitating human health and safety are discussed. Ergonomics is a multidisciplinary subject and draws from different sciences, technology, arts, etc. and its application in design can range from products, spaces, and communications to interactions. So wherever human beings are present, ergonomics can help human efficiency by enriching design. This chapter also shows the relation between design and ergonomics and how they are intricately associated with one another in that ergonomics enriches design and makes it much more humane. Both design and ergonomics aim to cater to the needs and wants of the users (humans). These two subjects complement one another and make the design (tangible or intangible) more robust and effective. The application of ergonomics in design is possible wherever there are humans involved. It can be applied in the design of a hammer, to a space like a classroom or auditorium, and even to complex domains like display and control of aircrafts.
