ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the basic ergonomic issues and principles in designing any space ranging from the telephone booth to the auditorium. The most important step in this direction is proper visualization of the space with respect to humans in the space, their movement pattern, and the different elements in space. Thus, the concepts of plan and elevation in space design are introduced and how the different aspects of space such as work surface height, reach, etc. are to be calculated and the ergonomic principles behind are discussed. This is then followed by ergonomics of seating and the different behavioral space dimension factors. Different spaces such as cash counters, public seating, auditorium, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and the ergonomic principles in designing are discussed at length. Ergonomics issues to be considered in the case of the challenged, elderly, and children are also discussed. This is necessary because when it comes to public place design one has to consider a variety of users and accommodate them with safety and comfort.
