ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ergonomic issues involved in designing exhibitions ranging from trade fairs and museums to fairs in open areas. It starts with crowd flow management and the ergonomic principles in managing them. Then the cognitive ergonomic issues in movement of crowds in space are discussed in order to make the space more attractive to the users. Ergonomic issues in the placement of exhibits so that the crowd is able to see them and the issues of dark and light adaptation when movement happens from high to low illuminated areas and vice versa are discussed. The issues of amenities and facilities and other behavioral space issues like seating at regular intervals are discussed so as to prevent fatigue and boredom for the users. This chapter explains the ergonomic principles and their application in space with focus on space design, elements in space and their placement, placement of exhibits, and the movement pattern of people in such spaces. Ergonomics ensures that exhibits are visible for all users and users are able to interact with them when necessary.
