ABSTRACT

The very characteristics of space that contribute to its array of uses are also elements that carry with it certain dangers. Chapter 2 briefly discusses the space environment, setting the stage for the arguments of the remaining chapter. In a non-technical manner, it discusses concepts important to space operations including gravity, orbital dynamics, and debris including mitigation, remediation, and challenges. It also details the extensive uses of space for economic purposes including communications, remote sensing, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). Chapter 2 therefore reinforces the idea that the global economy is highly dependent on space and also highly vulnerable to the growing population of space junk which might only be enhanced by conflict in space.
