ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 builds upon existing theoretical literature to develop and present the trial and error regime change model. The chapter begins with a discussion on the concept of regime and the nature of regime changes in general. In particular, the chapter examines how Myanmar’s military regime is informed by its praetorian ethos. The chapter explores how the tatmadaw developed into a durable authoritarian regime that has adapted and evolved based on the various challenges faced by the regime. The chapter argues that Myanmar’s regime transition went through a trial and error process, and the current transition reflects the continuity or the evolution of Myanmar’s military regime.
