ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys scholarship on the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, along with Sanskrit sources on Sūrya including the Mahābhārata, Rāmāyaṇa, the Purāṇas and the Sāmba Upa-Purāna. It goes on to articulate a synchronic strategy for studying the Sanskrit Purāṇas, focusing on frame narratives.
