ABSTRACT

Thinking deeply about the film genres one loves and understanding why one loves them is a very good place to begin as a screenwriter. Knowing which genres one loves the most can reveal the kind of film one most wants to write—and will be most successful at writing. And understanding one's emotional connection to a genre can help one create an empathy machine that will connect emotionally to one's audience. Knowing what a film genre is and gaining an understanding of different film genres can be equally valuable. “Genres provide a method of classifying films according to characteristics that they have in common,” Dan Gurskis says in The Short Screenplay. As screenwriters begin to develop their idea and script, they might decide to combine genres, such as horror and comedy, as Matt Stevens did with The Making of “Killer Kite” and James Feeney did with Killer Kart.
