ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ten reasons to write with a partner. One of the reasons is that although writing is lonely, it does not have to be. Writing with a partner doubles a screenwriter's chance for success. A writing workout partner helps the other stay motivated, focused, and productive in the face of countless rejections. The chapter explores the process of finding a right writing partner; the right place and time are crucial because they influence how well a screenwriter writes. If two screenwriters do evolve apart, they should be honest with each other about it and move on to different partners or try writing alone. Their time will not have been lost, because even if the partnership does not work out, the screenwriters will have gained invaluable insights into collaboration, which is the very nature of filmmaking, even for solo writers.
