ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces three key concepts of the book about Chinese female bankers: global cities, translocality and gender. This helps us understand how globalised economic spaces, translocal and local connections, and gender politics at work and home affect the career paths of contemporary female professionals working in the international finance industry. It also discusses the complexity of ‘Chineseness’ in China and diasporic locations. How does the intersection of ethnicity, place of origin and gender affect the coping strategies of female professionals in the fast-paced, ever changing finance industry in the Asia Pacific? The discussion in this chapter sets the scene for understanding how gender norms continue, change and modernise.
