ABSTRACT

The patient moves to a place of his own. He was feeling unwell and wanted to talk about the link between the cancer and the relief he felt from his symptoms when in psychotherapy. There is discussion of theories of the link between cancer and unexpressed anger. Talk in sessions was about how important psychotherapy had become. Friends, to whom he admitted how he was feeling, usually became upset; in turn this upset him and made him feel responsible for their emotions. Potential houses were viewed and with the help of family chose one and moved in. Then he soon became more ill; the vocal cords were affected by the tumour and talking was now always in a whisper. The physical deterioration brought thoughts of death to the fore. Two dreams emphasised imminent losses and the grief in the sessions was very present. When unexpressed by the patient the analyst felt it more acutely; when it was owned the sadness became bearable.
