ABSTRACT

The Oxford Dictionary defines prison as a place properly arranged and equipped for the reception of individuals who by legal process are convicted to be on trial or sentenced for punishment. In the name of investigating crimes, extracting confessions and punishing individuals, torture is severely inflicted upon the accused, which is inhumane and degrades the dignity of the person, claims Ashok Samal (2017). Do we know what exactly happens to the prisoners during incarceration and whether they are given the appropriate aid in order to be released as reformed individuals? This research attempts to answer these questions and studies the acquitted/bailed prisoners and retired prison police staff in a specific Tamil Nadu city (Madurai). This leads to a more comprehensive understanding of the prison system from the prisoner’s point of view in comparison to the retired police staff’s statements. Results and findings from this study will be instrumental in creating better policy impact and advocacy work for the ignored people of society.
