ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a description and definition of what we mean by progress in independent learning. It also presents how we measure progress in independent learning in the classroom and what specifically researchers have to say about it. Following an outline of how independent learning is specifically taught, a number of strategies are presented to help promote independent learning in lessons. The chapter continues with implications for leaders and key questions that teachers, school leaders, governors and parents should ask in respect of progress in independent learning. The chapter concludes with a personal vignette in relation to independent learning progression.
