ABSTRACT

Global warning is becoming a popular topic due to increasing evidence that human activities have played a major role in the increase in the Earth's atmospheric temperature. Heat is related to temperature differences and the energy transferred between objects or systems because of temperature differences. A quantitative measure of temperature may be obtained by using a thermometer, a device constructed to make use of a property of a substance that changes with temperature. Different liquid-in-glass thermometers show slightly different readings for temperatures other than fixed points because of the liquids’ different expansion properties. Expansion gaps between identical steel beams laid end to end are specified to be 0.060% of the length of each beam at an installation temperature of 68 °F. The internal energy of a system is composed of molecular kinetic energy as well as intermolecular and intramolecular potential energies.
