ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the phenomenon of transference and countertransference from the careseeking self. It shows how the therapeutic dynamic or relationship is the vital ingredient to work with the dynamics of attachment in adult life. Through the detailed account of a clinical case we see how the client is supported to explore the difficult territory of having to verbalize her early careseeking need to be held and experience affection, rather than relying on enacting this need through holding the therapist’s hand. The chapter explores the process of moving from fear to careseeking through the different phases of the work with the client.
