ABSTRACT

This chapter explores data indicating that caregiving has become many professional caregivers’ keystone system, masking unresolved careseeking in their family of origin. In contrast to the amount of time, effort, and research into childhood attachment status, very little attention has been paid to the dynamics of attachment in professional caregivers. McCluskey has amassed a database of over 800 such caregivers whom she has worked with over many days, months, and sometimes years. This chapter addresses the information gleaned from this work and what the lessons are for the kind of support caregivers need to function effectively, remain exploratory, and continue to grow as creative individuals with a satisfying interest sharing life with their peers.
