ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 examines the rate of maternal mortality in six Tudor parishes with a named midwife. Causes of maternal death and the role of a Tudor midwife in the case of a maternal death are discussed. The chapter covers maternal deaths in 16th-century parish registers, women at increased risk of complication and death and the interesting case of Mary Welshe and Mary Willows of Newport.
