ABSTRACT

Teacher standards are embedded in education systems, and have a direct impact on the ways in which teaching is conceptualised and professional learning is designed, advertised, and undertaken. This chapter explores the question of whether professional standards are a help or hindrance to the professional learning and capacity building of the teaching profession. It discusses the role and purpose of teacher standards in teacher reflection, coaching, and evaluation. It provides an overview of standards used in England, the USA, and Australia, as well as independent standards frameworks, in order to understand the landscape of professional standards, the ways in which they are being deployed around the world, and their role in professional learning. The chapter additionally gives examples of how the Danielson Framework for Teaching and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers can be used as tools for teacher growth.
