ABSTRACT

Achieving sustainability will require the combined efforts of the public and private sectors, society, and individuals. Organizations are composed of individuals, and it is with individuals that sustainability action must begin. This chapter will provide an overview of how system leadership has been and can be applied at the individual level to achieve sustainable outcomes. The sustainability context for this chapter will be with the individual level, absent any formal organizational setting. Chapter topics will include how to achieve individual sustainability and education and training for individual sustainability. With that foundation, system leadership for individual sustainability will be examined, including how to develop system leadership for sustainability. Finally, the content will be examined from a global perspective, and barriers to development of individual system leadership for sustainability will be examined. Examples of sustainability system leaders will be discussed throughout the chapter, and the chapter concludes with a case study related to development of individual system leadership.
