ABSTRACT

The contemporary Hollywood film industry, which is characterised by conglomerates, is based on economic models which help maximise profits. One of the major challenges to the film studios’ dominance of the industry has been the rise of streaming services, digital platforms which allow users to stream films directly to their televisions or any other screen. One way of addressing the falling audience numbers in the USA was for Hollywood to focus on the global audience. Representations in films are shaped by specific narrative styles and genre; certain genres are considered to be gendered while the grammar of classic narrative structure positions characters into typical male and female roles. The cinematography in the opening of the film sets up its low-key, poignant atmosphere. It suggests the way in which the central characters, Carol and Therese, desire each other but must keep their feelings hidden.
