ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a key problem wounding the world – the cult of ‘growthism’ or ‘growthmania’, which argues that on a finite planet we can continue to grow physically forever. It also discusses how we can ‘break the denial dam’ that holds back healing. The chapter explores the idea embedded in Western society that ‘resources are infinite’, and shows why this is not be true. Western society has a fundamental problem – it refuses to accept reality and to respect the ecological and physical limits of our world. When struggling with the trauma of change, segments of society can turn away from reality in favour of a more comfortable lie. Our society has a fixation on economics and society. Our society looks firstly to economics and secondarily to social issues. The intelligentsia in our society has mainly focused on social justice, and ‘ecojustice’ is rarely given equal prominence, or even any consideration at all.
