ABSTRACT

Experimenting with risky behaviors is part of development through adolescence. However, when experimentation is with drugs and alcohol, there is a possibility of lifelong habits or addiction. However, for new schools and for revisions on existing policies, given that substance abuse is a mental health issue, school counselors should be involved in creating school and district policies on use of illegal substances at school. This following chapter provides tools and strategies for working with students who have these types of problems. The seven tasks of the hybrid model are: to engage the client; to explore the situation; to provide support; to examine alternatives; to plan in order to establish control; to obtain a commitment; and to follow up. It is crucial that parents are given information about the risks associated with alcohol and drug use.
