ABSTRACT

Immigrants fleeing from countries due to war or human devastation, natural events, or other conditions that make it dangerous to live in their home country can file for Temporary Protection Status (TPS). Ongoing immigration law changes have caused a state of emergency and incited instability for undocumented immigrant students. These challenges can be navigated using a theoretical framework, their own professional experiences and those of supervisors or consultants, knowledge of mental health considerations, codes of professional ethics, and multicultural considerations. These considerations are discussed in the following sections to provide counselors with tools that will be helpful when working with undocumented students. The authors reached out to school counselors through an association email listserv and interest groups where they were able to describe the experiences and issues related to working with undocumented students.
