ABSTRACT

Teachers build healthy relationships with students and, when this is done correctly, help them to gain valuable information helpful toward their education. Educators must maintain a level of professionalism that does not cross the boundary of the teacher/student relationship. The consequences of a teacher/student inappropriate relationship can be detrimental for either involved and can affect them for years following the relationship. By educating the students and providing a confidential method to report a suspected relationship, administrators would be notified sooner, and the teacher could be monitored closely to see if professional standards were maintained with all of their students. Aside from criminal charges, some state boards of education, as in Texas, can issue sanctions on a certified teacher if they are guilty of pursuing a romantic involvement with a student. All contact must be documented and should only involve school-related information.
