ABSTRACT

The case study provides awareness of how school personnel, including the school counselor, formed a team to assist two students who were at-risk of escalating unhealthy behaviors. This chapter surveys secondary school counselors in a large county in the US state of Texas regarding their experiences in working with students who had been involved in dating violence. Strategies for creating an environment where students may feel safe to seek help from the school counselor include: Awareness and prevention methods for dating violence can be addressed through a teamwork approach in which students' physical and mental well-being is considered. Aspect of adolescent behavior that might be influenced by students’ involvement in abusive dating relationships is their potential to be involved in abusive relationships as an adult. In addition, a failure to address the needs of dating violence victims' and perpetrators' future mental health, such as depression, may be present during adulthood.
