ABSTRACT

Being an advocate for early childhood education means being a voice for the voiceless. Young children are unable to articulate if there is negativity in their classroom environment. When labeling negative teacher-to-child interaction in this chapter, behaviors such as threats, negative facial expressions, yelling, and using a harsh voice with children are discussed. The level of these behaviors is also noted. Teaching is a difficult job. Teachers are humans who have good days and bad. However, within the chapter, it is noted the frequency and intensity of the negative behaviors and how even though teachers are human, having negative interactions with children is unacceptable in early childhood classrooms. Strategies are suggested on how to advocate for children by speaking up against negative teacher–child interactions. These strategies include self-reflection, seeking help, and various tips on how to stop being complicit to negative teacher–child interactions.
