The Impact of Technology on Mental Health
Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional wellbeing–it is all about how we think, feel, and behave. This chapter explains what is meant by the terms “mental health” and “mental illness.” It describes the most common types of mental disorder and how they are treated. Stress levels among constant checkers are considerably higher than they are among people who do not engage with technology and social media as frequently. Interactions on social media can have a major impact on an individual’s well-being and satisfaction. Taking responsibility for students’ mental health needs is particularly complex at a time when universities are rightfully under pressure about cost and access. According to a 2015 report from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health, the number of students visiting counseling centers increased by 30% between 2009 and 2015. Loneliness is a universal human experience that can affect us as badly as any physical ailment.
