ABSTRACT

There is a common saying that “Education is a human right and not a privilege.” However, and sadly too, that quote does not apply to many Africans. This is due to the state of higher education in the continent that is confronted with many challenges that incapacitate higher education institutions (HEIs) from producing well-trained, labor-relevant, and responsive graduates who can contribute to the competitiveness of Africa, the youngest continent in the world. This chapter addresses the challenges that HEIs in Africa face; the slow but positive changes taking place in these institutions; and the roles and responsibilities of African governments, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the many business corporations that are operating in Africa in addressing these challenges in order to fast-track and enhance the quality and competitiveness of Africa’s HEIs in becoming global solution providers, thus increasing their marketing capacity in today’s increasingly globally competitive field of higher education.
