ABSTRACT

The concept of classroom management may seem old school to some educators. That term may be trite, but being able to positively influence student behavior never goes out of style. The best teachers either understand it, or they just instinctually do it on a consistent basis. The teachers that struggle the most in this area have limited ability to positively engage their students. In the 1960s, Dr. Eric Berne explored a concept called transactional analysis that identified three modes or personalities people have—adult mode, parent mode, and child mode. If a teacher is in business mode, the students are typically in their business mode. If a teacher goes into parent mode, the students typically go into their child mode. If a teacher goes into child mode, the students typically go into either a parent or child mode. Both of the educators shared that they needed first two weeks to get students in their business mode when they entered the classroom.
