ABSTRACT
Swingler attends St Ronan’s prep school, where he writes his first poems. In 1922 he goes to Winchester College, where he enjoys athletic, musical and academic success. He becomes friends with Thomas Hodgkin. Swingler’s brother Arthur is killed in a motorbike accident. Swingler stays with the Hodgkins at Bamburgh Castle.
