ABSTRACT
In 1928 Swinger goes up to New College, Oxford. There he is courted by Dick Crossman and becomes friends with Gabriel Carritt and Louis MacNeice. He writes religious plays for St Ebb’s Boys’ Club, plays the flute in the Oxford Opera Club Orchestra and the Oxford Music Festival. He contributes to the undergraduate magazine Farrago and joins the Promethean Society. He suffers a religious crisis and fails Greats. He meets Geraldine Peppin.
