ABSTRACT

Surgery as a management option for diabetes has yet to be included within any international diabetes treatment protocols. Despite this, surgical procedures are being used. This chapter describes the most common metabolic procedures being used for management of type 2 diabetes (Roux-en-Y, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and biliopancreatic diversion) along with the three transplant options being used for management of type 1 diabetes (islet cell, stem cell and pancreatic transplant).
