ABSTRACT

Summary

In 2004, officials in Maryland began looking into the use of non-native oysters, such as the Asian Suminoe oyster, as the target of oyster restoration, after efforts with native oysters proved ineffectual; however, the danger that the triploid non-native would escape and breed proved fatal for the measure. Millions of dollars and years of effort went into the research of alternative measures for oyster restoration. The use of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis elucidates decision makers’ preferences and thought processes. This chapter is unique in that some of the errors used in the assessment will be discussed and be the starting point for discussion on improvements.
