ABSTRACT
Summary
While Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) models are most often constructed for and sufficient for selecting among a set of alternatives, they can also serve as a starting point and a component for more sophisticated decision support. The extensions discussed in this chapter combine MCDA with other techniques, concepts, and tools to address a range of complexities that arise in decision situations. By combining MCDA with value of information, portfolio approaches, optimization, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) (and of course other emerging modeling technologies we do not discuss here, such as agent-based modeling and artificial intelligence), we are able to further empower decision makers by exploiting the amount of computational power available in recent years.
