ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces Maurits and his work in reforming the army. Even in early life, Maurits proved himself decisive and resourceful. After William of Orange was assassinated, Maurits, together with his cousin William Lodewijk, reformed and expanded the Dutch Army. It was made more professional, regularly paid and more efficiently equipped. New drills and tactics were innovated in which the troops were thoroughly trained. Maurits and William Lodewijk created a Dutch Army fit to take on the experienced battle-hardened Spanish armies. In creating such a Dutch Army, one of the major factors necessary for a successful insurgency was fulfilled.
